Sailors Utilize the Right Sailboat Anchors and Fenders

For some sailors docking a sailboat may be a daunting task, however it is a vital chore that is inevitable and highly emphasized. The proper docking technicque safely secures a sailboat to a dock or other station. However, preparing a sailboat for safely casting off is a task equivalent in importance. Executing these chores is highly important and is necessary for all sailors.

Learning to properly dock and cast off is highly valuable, however it is equally as important to carry the right equipment for these tasks. One of the most fundamental sailboat parts to have on board is an anchor. Sailboat anchors are utilized to fix a sailboat to the bottom of the ocean floor. Choosing the right anchor for one’s sailboat may be overwhelming due to the numerous types of anchors available. Making the appropriate choice for sailboat anchors may seem difficult but Fortress Marine Anchors make it easier by offering a wide variety of anchors for all sailboats. All Fortress anchors are precision-machined from an aluminum alloy comparable to steel but only half the weight, penetrate deeper in the sea bottoms for great holding power, have anodized finish for durability, are rustproof and sharp, easy to store and manage, and come with lifetime parts replacement warranty. With these anchors, sailors can look forward to being safely stationed out on the sea or back on the dock.

Along with anchors, sailboat anchor mounts are useful for trouble-free storage on the deck. Particularly, Windline anchor mounts fit the specifications of Danforth, Fortress, and Delta type anchors. Like Fortress, Windline caters to the size specifications of any sailboat. Windline provides reliable features including: heavy-duty construction, ideal measurements for corresponding anchors, and are optimal for mounting anchors on sailboats with limited deck space.

In addition to anchors, sailboat fenders are also essential equipment for docking. Sailboat fenders are used to protect sailboats from bumping into the dock or into one another. Polyform U.S. produces fenders that allow for maximum strength and utility. All Polyform U.S. fenders are made with even wall thickness, molded in ribs, reinforced ropeholds, and unique Polyform valves for long term durability. The proper sailboat fender determines the safety of both one’s sailboat and the sailboats of others at the dock.

Sailors can never be too prepared for critical chores such as docking and casting off. Although the right techniques are crucial, it is just as necessary to choose and carry proper sailboat equipment for smooth docking and casting off. A sailor’s efficient techniques may be hindered without these trustworthy sailboat anchors and fenders.

Sailing Asian Coastlines

November 16th, 2009
Two people on the shore of the Pacific Ocean
Image via Wikipedia

The nightlife is vibrant in a quaint harbor on the coast of Thailand. The locals have laid out a small bazaar selling everything from clothing to food to fish to knock off DVDs. This is just a small sample of the lifestyle one encounters while sailing along the coasts of Asia. Thailand harbor’s will lend a different experience than docking at a harbor in the Philippines or India. Come sail along the coastlines of Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, and India and be immersed in many of their exclusive customs.

Sailors can feel welcomed in Thailand with the white pristine sands, and the warm tropical climate. These waters draw people year round, partly due to to the renowned friendliness of the Thai people, and of course the year round cruising possibilities. There are many divers who visit these waters for the magnificent coral reefs off the shore. Thai cuisine has ample selection for all, and there will never be an empty stomach or idle moment. Of course the must-see city is Bangkok, where the Thai identity is still visible beneath the modern guise of the bustling metropolis.

There is no official count as to exactly how many islands are in Indonesia since there are so many. However the range is within 13,000 to 17,000 individual islands. With all these numerous islands, it is conceivable to sail and discover an untouched landscape and coral reefs thriving with life. For the avid surfers, drop boat anchor in Flores or Lombok. Surfing in Sumatra is unparallelled. Visit Komodo and see the infamous Komodo dragons. For a taste of the city life, the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is the most populated city in Southeast Asia.

In Vietnam, the first place to visit is Halong Bay. The limestone islands on the north coast are exactly the type of breathtaking backdrops to sail a boat alongside of. These massive pinnacles, which also go by karsts, have stirred many local legends, mythology, and poetry. For lush beaches visit Nha Trang and hang out with the fish in the waters ideal for snorkeling. Enjoy the sun set over the horizon, lighting up the limestone in radiant warm colors, while sitting on a sailboat.

One of the lesser visited destinations of Southeast Asia, the Philippines boasts over 7,107 islands laid out on 1000 km of turquoise waters. Most of these islands have sandy beaches and volcanic mountains. One island to visit for its superb beaches is Puerto Galera. For excellent anchorages, stop by Cebu and its neighboring islands. Most visitors to this island archipelago stop by the country’s capital, Manila. If one happens to find themselves on Roxas Boulevard, be sure to view the sunset. Glimpses of Spanish culture are fused into the architecture and lifestyle prevalent among its people.

With time permitting, sailing on the coastlines of India is decidedly rewarding. There is an interconnected waterway more 560 miles long in the region of Kerala. One could view the entire natural habitat all from the comfort of a boat as it travels in rivers, lakes, and inlets. The waters off the main coast are abundant with sea turtles and fish. Diving and snorkeling can be done since nearby there are coral reefs. The coastlines are well developed but there are over 500 islands of the archipelago of Andaman or Nicobar which are well isolated.

There are so many experiences, such as fine cuisine, diving, fishing, snorkeling, and cultural diffusion when sailing along the coasts of these Asian countries. There is a collection of so many islands of different countries in such proximity. The sun rises over a placid Pacific Ocean as a cool breeze whips through the air, catching the sails, propelling sailors into the fascinating unknown.

Why Choose a Previously Owned Sailboat

Author: Jay Gaulard

A Sailboat on the waters of Sydney Harbour.

Owning a sailboat is a dream that many people have, but few ever reach. There’s nothing as wonderful as flying through the water, the sails cracking above your head as you chart waters that are new to you. It’s a wonderful hobby and one that can be shared with friends and family members . . . but first, you need a sailboat.

The Cost of a New Sailboat

Sailboats are expensive. Even a fairly small one is going to put a big dent in your wallet and if you’re interested in a proper boat with living space for longer trips out to sea, it’s really going to cost you if you buy new. In fact, new sailboats cost a lot more than initially thought because not only do you have to pay for the actual boat, you will need rigging, sails, a trailer and other things to actually make the boat usable.

Many new boat owners didn’t realize this when they purchased their first boat and the staggering costs just to kit the boat out can be overwhelming, not to mention damaging to the bank account. When you factor everything in, chances are you’ll have to pay quite a bit more than you expected for your new sailboat.

This is a good reason to select a used sailboat to invest in.

Reasons to Buy a Used Sailboat

There are actually quite a few reasons to go with a boat that has been previously owned. While the price difference can be quite marked and is the main thing that buyers look at for their purchase, it isn’t the only factor to consider. In fact, you’ll find that there is far more to the whole buying process.

First of all, you have to look at what the used sailboat includes. Since most sellers are getting rid of their only boat, they will usually throw in the sails, life vests and even the trailer, which essentially eliminates the need to purchase all these things on their own. That’s a huge savings right there, on top of the original savings of buying used instead of new.

On top of receiving the extras as part of your purchase, you’ll find that you can often negotiate the price of a used boat, something that just wouldn’t be possible when buying new. Everything can be reason to bargain with a boat, from the dents and scratches to possible repairs that need to be made. You may even be able to talk the owner into doing some of the repairs before you buy.

There are more risks assumed with a second hand boat, but you will also get more benefits. New boats instantly begin to depreciate in value once they are purchased, so your investment will never be recovered. On the other hand, a used boat probably won’t lose much more off its value and you will find that in many cases, the sailboat will actually be worth more after a few years than it was when you purchased it. This is particularly true of limited edition boats that almost always appreciate in value.

Getting Experience

When it comes to working on boats, there’s nothing as great as having one of your own to practice on. Sailboats require maintenance and you’ll be able to work on your boat whenever you want, there’s always something that needs doing. This can be an excellent way to build up experience with working on boats, but that isn’t the only type of experience you can get.

Sailing can be tricky business and you probably don’t want to try your newfound skills out on a brand new boat. A used one won’t matter as much if you bump it a little too roughly against the dock while learning to dock or if you forget to drop the bumpers over the side. You’ll feel a lot freer to make mistakes with an older boat and the consequences won’t be as high.

This doesn’t mean you should look for a total beater, but a used sailboat that isn’t in perfect condition can be ideal for learning on. It’s also going to be cheaper to repair since any damage isn’t to a new boat. This offers a huge advantage for any new sailor.

Making Sure You Get a Good Deal

No one wants to lose out in a deal, so do your research and make sure you know just what you’re dealing with. Know the price range that you are looking at before you go check out specific boats and if you don’t know much about boats, make sure you take someone along who does.

An inspection is a good idea, since it could turn up some hidden problems that you don’t know about. These types of problems may cost big time in the future. What you don’t know could very well end up breaking the bank if you don’t find this out now, before you’ve paid or signed anything. An inspection should cover all areas of the boat and make sure that it all runs smoothly, including the engine. The sails, if included, should also be checked for wear and tear, as should the rigging. Make sure everything that is supposed to be included is. This will involve taking the sails out and spreading them on the ground to check them, which may seem like a big task. The end result will be worth it though, when you have your sailboat.

A used sailboat is almost always a better investment than a brand new one and will ensure that you have the boat of your dreams without breaking the bank. You’ll be able to enjoy taking friends and family out on the sea and impressing colleagues, or learning to sail without worrying too much about bumping up the boat.

There are a lot of places to buy a used sailboat, just make sure that you get it through a reputable seller or owner. Doing a thorough inspection is also a good idea, to make sure you are getting the best deal.

Learning How to Sail – Safe Boating Tips
Here are a few hot tips when learning to sail that will make your boating not only enjoyable but safe too.

1. Be Wise to Read the Weather
You must be wise enough to check the local weather before you depart for boating. Radio, TV, and coast guard forecasts are sure source of information. If you notice, rough and volatile changing winds, darkening clouds, or sudden dip of temperature, it is an indication for you to play safe with the weather. Watch the barometer readings for sudden changes if you have one on board.

2. Adhere to the Pre-departure Checklist
Being prepared for any eventuality in the water is a way of maintaining proper boating safety. From tips on fueling up to compliance with the fire safety regulations, checking the pre-departure checklist is the best measure to be sure that no points regarding the safety are forgotten.

3. Apply Common Sense
Using your common sense is the most important part of boating safety. Always be alert of small watercraft and large vessels that can be hindrance to your boat. You need to operate at a safe speed always. Always be pay heed and respect the navigational aids and buoys. These aids have been placed there to ensure a safe passage.

4. Make Sure You Have an Assistant Skipper
When you venture out to the water, it is ideal that you have one more person who is familiar with all aspects of the boat. The assistant skipper must be familiar with the operations, handling and various safety tips. In case of an injury to the primary navigator, a presence of an assistant skipper, he or she can safely navigate the boat to the shore. Instruction on the operating of the VHF Radio is essential.

5. Chart out a Passage Plan
Always inform people about your passage plan and register it with the coast guard or your local marina staff. Passage plan is the course of the route you will be taking and the number of days you are intending to be out at sea. A typical passage plan consists of: Your name, your address, your phone number, and the phone number of the trip leader. It must also have the phone number of the passengers along with their other details and name. You must include the type of boat you are in the registration information, the itinerary, the signal and safety equipment in the boat and other types of communication means on board. Do not forget to de-register your passage plan with the coast guard or marina staff on safe arrival at your destination.

6. Make the Use of Lifejackets
Most victims give up their life in water because of the lack of proper knowledge of using the life jacket. Prior to departure, try your life jacket on, as they are then adjusted properly ready for use in case of an emergency.

A Memorable Adventure Vacation in Brazil

October 1st, 2008

A memorable adventure vacation should entail not just the people you are with but the impact of the place that you have been into. And going to Jericoacoara in Brazil can do just that. If you go on an adventure vacation in a very inviting place such as this, you will no longer have to worry about the people you are with or any other minor considerations because what the place offers will surely captivate your heart.

Popularly called ‘Jeri,’ Jericoacoara can be found at the northern part of the Brazilian state of Ceará. Up until now, the place is still considered as a remote island because you cannot access it easily. You will need to ride in a bus for long hours and ride is a dune buggy, which will take you 12 miles closer to your destination. To many, the road to Jeri itself is a big part of the vacation because getting there is truly an adventure!

Despite the long hours of travel, you wouldn’t find it a waste of time especially upon seeing immaculately incredible beaches. You will also be amazed to see the how beautiful the eco-protected haven. Getting here will definitely give you a taste of going back to basics because you would not see paved roads, vehicles or cars, malls, banks, and even lighted street lights because there is limited and restricted supply of electricity.

Although it lacks the conveniences that the modern world has to offer, the sheer beauty that you can remember for the rest of your life will still amaze you: landscape that is dominated by sand dunes, glorious warm sea waters and clear lagoons or a national park that boast of wildlife unique to Brazil.

Places and activities to discover

An adventure vacation in Jeri, Brazil can open up you to a world of exciting outdoor activities and places to discover. If you plan to enjoy outdoors to the fullest, try windsurfing, sandboarding, kitesurfing, or horse-riding. If you want to be more adventurous, start an exploration at the dunes, various rock formations, or visit the natural pools in nearby villages such as Guriu, a famous fishing community and Mangue Seco.

What you need to prepare

But before indulging into a vacation free from the toxicity of modern life, there are some things that you need to pay attention to such as knowing how to get there, places where you can stay, the length of your stay, your timetable, as well as the things that you need to bring.

Getting there is possible via air travel and land travel. When you travel by air, you can fly from New York off to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo and through North Star Air Taxi through a charter flight off to Fortaleza. By land, you can ride a bus hailing from the central bus station of Fortaleza off and head to the place called ‘Jijoca’ and ride to a four-wheel drive off to Jeri for about 6 hours.

When it comes to the date of your vacation, you would not have to worry because the place has hot and humid weather all-year long. If you are planning to do some outdoor activities, go there between July to December. Avoid going there during the rainy season of season of February to May because not much activities can be done.

In terms of place to stay and accommodation, worry no more because you can get the best services and amenities at the beachfront Mosquito Blue or opt for vibrant and decent lodgings at the place called “Pousada Ibiscus” which is less expensive.

A Little Mexican Adventure Vacation

October 1st, 2008
Cancún
Image via Wikipedia

A lot of people plan their vacations months in advance. The reason why some people do it is because they would want everything to be perfect. They want the hotel checked out, they want the destination close to the hotel, they want their activities lined up and ready for them and of course they want to be treated special because after all they are paying tons and tons of money.

This is how an adventure vacation is perceived. Months of preparation followed by countless weeks of anticipation and anxiety, this is usually how a regular vacationer sees it and it’s how they live out the drama of their vacation.

Now when we talk about vacation some people would think that to enjoy their vacation they would need t travel across the globe to seek out and uncharted island blissfully located in the middle of nowhere and strategically located right next to civilization. Some people would also think that they need to spend tons and tons of money just to get them there, an island bordered by the savagery of the out doors and the comforts of civilization. But sometimes when people look too far away they miss what’s under their noses.

Many people prefer going to more luxurious and popular places without considering those that could offer exciting adventure and interesting places to visit. Nowadays, when you talk about people missing things that are right under their noses—I’m talking about missing out on a good place to go to for a vacation. Some people spend too much of their time looking away to places like France, Italy, London etc. etc. when some of the good places to go to are just a border away in Mexico.

Though we must admit not all of Mexico is for the sight seers, there are many places in the heartland of Mexico that are not really for tourist and their vacation getaways. Some are cruel realities of life that really require the attention of the government. Mexico is a really nice place to be in because of the virgin forests and the beautiful beaches, but if there would be any improvement in the tourism scene in Mexico, it has to start now.

Anyway, one of the few places that really deserve hats off is a place called San Blas, Mexico. Long before Spanish settlers set foot in this little gateway to California, people have already started settling here. Some people speculate that the lost civilization of the Incas may have been from there once.

It may not be as popular as Cancun but it does hold it own brand of notoriety especially for birds. Yes that’s right birds. Many of the bird watching enthusiast flock to this little barrio surrounded by forests, lagoons, mangroves and endless islets that serve as excellent breeding grounds for both exotic and local species of birds.

Another attraction here are the ruins of Fort San Basilio built atop of a steep hill the La Contaduria. Imagine yourself on an adventure vacation high above the expanse of the town and the harbor. A good place to see the whole town and the beach, a good thing about it is that it’s not too far away unlike when you need to have your fix on.

Here, you can enjoy not just a peaceful environment but also a feeling of self-fulfillment and utmost relaxation.

Before adventure vacation has gained its popularity, the Grand Canyon in Arizona has been popular to so many families and their generations. This is because the place has its innate beauty where culture, history, and nature are woven together to create a wonderful combination.

Adventure Sailing Vacation Has No Limits

August 14th, 2008

Adventure sailing vacation has no limits when even the physically disabled are able to achieve such a feat. This is as long as there are charities and clubs around that allow people with mixed abilities to work side by side with an able crew on equal terms.

Currently, such groups can be booked for a sailing vacation that will last from 4 days or 4 weeks. Ships can be charted to go from one point in the US to another. Charters those across the Atlantic might sail south or the west to enjoy the warm waters of the Caribbean.

Tour groups that provide these cruises are suitable for beginners and veterans alike. First timers get learn the basics and at the end of the course get a certificate. To get more experience, they will have to head out to see regularly. Those who don’t have the time can take an online course because although it is not a substitute for certification, it is a good tool in preparation for your continuing sailing education.

But if you are just doing this for fun to spend time with friends, you don’t have to work. Given that charters already assign a trained crew, you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the ocean voyage.

Along the way, the ship will dock in different ports. This allows people to go inland and spend some time ashore. They can sleep there as well or go back to the ship to watch the harbor and the stars at night before it is time to set sail to their next destination.

At sea, the crew might encounter dolphins, seals and whales swimming alongside the ship. As they get closer to land, they will most likely encounter cormorants, guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins, shags, skuas and razorbills among other creatures.

Part of the package includes good quality fresh food so you don’t have to bring anything when you come aboard. Crews will do the cooking but you can assist if you want to get into the action.

To make such tours accessible to those who are and are not physically challenged, companies make it a point that the meeting points are easily accessible by plane and at cheap rates. Booking can be made through your travel agent or you can make the reservation online. You can look at their itinerary for the year so you know where the ship is going on a certain date.

There are also sailing clubs for the disabled. Some will require you to pay a membership fee while others hand this out for free.

Perhaps the biggest achievement for those who are disabled is to compete against others that have similar disabilities. Established in 1998, the US Disabling Team competes in various races annually and the biggest one this year happens to be the 2008 Paralympic Games which will be held in Qingdao, China about 430 miles east of the Capital.

So whether it is just for fun or to race for the grand prize, adventure sailing vacation has no limits even to those with physical disabilities. This is because they can be trained to run the ship just as well as an able bodied person so they are able to set out to sea and return back to port.

Adventure Sailing is More Fun When You Own The Yacht

August 5th, 2008

You can charter adventure sailing vacation to almost any destination in the world. The only problem is that it will cost you a lump sum paying for the crew, the meals and the fuel for the trip. You can probably save money on a sailing vacation when you own the yacht but only if you know how to navigate and control it.

The advantage of owning a boat is that you can go on a sailing vacation at anytime. You don’t have to call your travel agent or make any reservation online since the boat is just sitting at the dock waiting for you to come aboard. The only thing you have to do is buy food and fuel which should be enough to get you back to port.

The boat also brings financial benefits because when you are not using it, this can be rented out to those who want to go on their own sailing vacation as long as they are able to pay your rate. This of course means additional revenue for you so the ship stays in good shape.

This makes it also ideal for those who want to conduct business on board because this is a tax deductible once you register your boat as a place of business. To see how this works, get in touch with your tax advisor

Another financial benefit of owning your own yacht is the fact that this is considered to be a second home. This is as long as the boat has at least one berth, a permanent galley and a head which is the requirement of the IRS.

If you can’t buy your own yacht, there is something called fractional boat ownership which means for a certain period during the year, you can do whatever you want with the boat. This will allow you to use it to go on a trip with your family.

The best thing about this is that a group of you share the cost of owning the yacht which already includes its maintenance, insurance, dock space, equipment, fuel and repairs.

This can only happen of course after you have completed a boating safety class and a safety orientation. This will not be a problem for you if you are already certified to sail a boat and know how to use all the equipment like charts, compass and GPS on board.

The other option is to join a boat club. Unlike part time sharing, you don’t get to own a boat. But as a member, you are entitled to up to 4 advanced reservations at any given time and access to powerboats or to sailboats that are up to 30 feet in length. The club for its part will shoulder all  the other expenses such as maintenance, cleaning, storage and insurance.

There are many of then around so you won’t have a hard time choosing one. Some cater to one market while others cater to all. They also offer boating classes for those who want to do this for fun or commit themselves in the sport.

Adventure sailing vacation is truly better when you own the yacht as the only thing you have to do is drive on over to the docks, stow your gear on board and then sail off into the sunset.

What Are The Fears Prevailing About Sailing And How To Deal With Them?

April 13th, 2008

People Do Not Like the Strange Environment
Sailing is an activity that attracts many people from afar. When they watch people enjoy the sport. However, they themselves do not want to participate because of fear of water and the wind, in sum being at the mercy of the elements. This fear is common among many people in the world who would never enter a sailing boat. They, these people, do not wish to be part of an environment they have no control over.

They Want Everything In Their Control
A reason that prevents these people from enjoying the experience of sailing is that they do not like watching helplessly when a sailing boat tips over and they cannot do much. To those who summon the nerve and sail, they are irritated when they hit the rocks that are not visible to the surface and bump into other boats. They always thinking about rescue efforts just in case one of their children sitting on the deck falls into the water.

How To Get Rid Of Sailing Fears
However, all these fears about sailing exist in the minds of these reluctant sailors purely because of the ignorance of facts. The only way to get rid of this fear is to educate themselves properly about sailing. The reluctance to sail also stems from their discomfort at the unpleasant weather. If these reluctant sailors are asked to explain, many would answer that they will sail when certain conditions are met and that they won’t refuse to enjoy sailing. For them the presence of all-right conditions are the best motive to set sail.

Tell Any Reluctant Sailor These Rules And He Will Be Ready For Sailing

Here are some of those ground rules designed for the reluctant sailor.
• Start sailing only when the forecast for the wind is not above force four. This rule is a variation of the 12 degree C rule.
•If there is no forecast for bright sunshine then don’t venture out for sailing.
•Anchor only in boats where there is a definite route for escape for the sailor.
•Get a sailing enthusiast to ride with you, get them to commit to do any work needed on the decks and extract a promise that you not be asked to help him in any way.
•Do not assume any responsibility for the maintenance of the sailing boat.
