Sailing – How To learn If You Are A Beginner

There is no doubt that sailing is an art ; in order to grasp its fundamentals in a systematic manner, you have to practice at sailing. For most people the easiest way is to go sailing with either their parents or friends. But, what would you do if none of your relatives or friends were capable of sailing. Learning the skill of sailing from a friend doesn’t mean that you can become a qualified sailor. Several suppliers of yachts have made it necessary to hold a recognized qualification of sailing before you can buy a sailboat from them.

National Bodies Design Courses For Sailing
This is exactly why in many countries there is a national governing body for sailing. For example, the American Sailing Association or ASA in the United States and the Royal Yachting Association or RYA in United Kingdom are national associations. In order to help you in getting qualifications that are recognized around the world, these associations have come out with a series of courses. However, these governing bodies seldom run these courses themselves. Instead, they have invited applications from the private institutions and approve those, which, in their opinion, are capable of offering the required sailing education to the people.

Course Giving Both Practical And Theoretical Knowledge
There are courses that are designed to teach sailing for aspirants. These are  recognized degrees and offer both practical and theoretical knowledge to students. The courses cover handling all kinds of boat that are in use. For example, you can learn about powerboats, sail boats, motorboats, dinghies and many other courses that are supplementary to this such as the maintenance of diesel engine and sea survival courses.

The practical training is very important in sailing. That is why the number of students usually is no more than 5 along with one instructor. Let us now understand a little bit about the different courses offered at these institutes. If you are a beginner, it is better to take the course called Start Yachting.  No previous experienced is required for joining the course. The duration of this course is two days. During these two days, you will get to learn handling the sails, steering the yacht and some rope work along with information about the safety board.

Another course for the beginners in sailing is Competent Crew. Again, you do not need any previous experience for this course. However, the duration of this course is lengthier and it will take five days to complete it. In addition to above mentioned skills, you will also get to learn how to row a dinghy.
